Rugs You Can Wash in the Washing Machine
Machine-washable rugs are constructed with specific materials that are designed for easy cleaning and lasting durability. Flatwoven and low-pile constructions are popular as they gather less debris and dry faster. While our Tufted rugs are most ideal for larger sizes, like in living rooms, playrooms and bedrooms, where comfort is paramount.
While traditional rugs may use delicate materials and dyes unsuitable for home washing machines, machine-washable rugs prioritise durability without compromising quality. All of our rugs, from shaggy designs to faux hide styles, are suitable for machine washing, right at home.

These rugs can withstand frequent washing cycles, maintaining their colour vibrancy and structural integrity. But thereβs still a place for spot-cleaning. If your rug has been exposed to a small splash or stain or has dirt or debris on the surface, a hoover and wipe down with bleach-free detergent can help preserve the longevity of the rug by only cleaning the areas that need it most.
Check the Care Instructions Guide
Even with rugs that are designed to be cleaned in the washer, itβs important to follow the care instructions provided. Look for specific care instructions or labels that guide you on washing, drying, and any additional precautions. This should indicate the optimal temperature, whether the rug can be dried or spun, and whether there are any specific detergents to use or avoid.

Notably, for Ruggable rugs, pay attention to the washing machine size minimum requirements, especially if you're using a front load or top load machine with an agitator. Some larger rugs may recommend a 14+kg washing machine, which can usually be found at your local dry cleaner.
So before you throw your rug in the machine, always refer to the instructions and washing guide first, to make sure you're equipped with the necessary information to keep your rug looking its best.
How to Wash a Large Rug
If your rug is larger than 185x275 cm, including 245cm round rugs and 245x305cm, 275x365cm, and 305x425cm area rugs, then a regular 8-6kg washing machine will not be adequate to fit your rug. But that doesnβt mean it canβt be cleaned. You can take your large rug to dry cleaners or other industrial laundries with larger machines.

You can also care for your rug from home by spot cleaning any small areas that are affected by spills and stains. Minimising the frequency at which you machine wash your rug will extend its life. Be sure to hoover it often on a carpet setting and rotate the rug to ensure that it experiences even wear on all sides β especially if it is placed in a high-traffic area.
Preparing the Rug for Washing
If your rug needs a machine wash, there are some steps to take before you put the load on. Following these steps will help your rug last longer, and ensure that it is cleaned more effectively.

Clear the area: Begin by removing furniture and any obstacles from the rug so it can easily be removed from the nonslip Rug Pad and moved to your machine.
Shake off loose dirt: Take the rug outdoors and give it a good shake to remove loose dirt and debris. This step helps prevent excess dirt from clogging the washing machine. If you donβt have the space to do this, hoover over the Rug Cover before machine washing.
Check for stains: Thoroughly inspect the rug for any stains or spills. Pre-treat these areas by gently blotting or using a suitable stain remover. Addressing stains beforehand allows for a more effective cleaning process.
Follow care instructions: Refer to the care instructions provided to ensure you're following specific guidelines for your rug's material and construction. This can prevent damage to both your rug and your washing machine.
Loading and Washing the Rug
Just because you use a washing machine for your clothes doesnβt mean you know how to confidently machine-wash a rug. By following these steps, you can make sure your rug gets a thorough yet gentle clean that maintains its quality and appearance.

Loading: Place your rug into the washing machine, checking that it isn't overly compressed. If the rug is larger, you may need to use a larger-capacity machine.
Selecting the wash cycle: Choose a gentle or delicate wash cycle to protect the rug's fibres. Avoid long or heavy-duty cycles that could be too harsh, especially for more delicate materials.
Water temperature: Check the care instructions to determine the appropriate water temperature. Our washable rugs should always be washed on cold to prevent colour fading and fibre damage..
Choosing detergent: Use a mild detergent suitable for delicate fabrics. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that can compromise the rug's colours and integrity.
Avoid fabric softeners: Skip fabric softeners and scent boosters, as they may leave a residue on the rug.
How to Dry a Rug After Washing
While some machine washable rugs can be dried in the tumble dryer, it can damage the fibres leading to a shorter lifespan for your rug. To make sure it drys correctly and can be returned to pride of place on its nonslip Rug Pad, follow these steps to drying your rug after washing.

Air-Drying : Lay the rug flat in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors, to air-dry. Avoid direct sunlight, as it may lead to colour fading. Flip the rug occasionally to ensure even drying. To maintain the rug's shape, avoid hanging it vertically while drying. Instead, let it lie flat.
Low-Heat Machine Drying : If machine drying is recommended for your rug, use a low-heat or air-dry setting to prevent damage to the rug's fibres. Place the rug in the dryer with a couple of dry towels to aid the drying process.
Avoid High Heat : Steer clear of high-heat drying, as it can lead to shrinkage and affect the rug's texture.
Fluffing : Once the rug is fully dry, fluff and shake it gently to restore its texture.
Regular Maintenance : To keep the rug looking fresh, vacuum it regularly and address any spills promptly.
